Y’all want this party started right?! Y’all want this party started quickly, right??
Humor me and listen to that amazing song that, likely, only the AM folks will know. It was released in 1990, which already makes me feel old (older in a couple weeks.. đ ), and can already hear the “I wasn’t even BORN yet!” replies. I’ll shed one tear and move on.
Back to deadlifts. Deadlifts are awesome. Being able to still pick things up off the ground without pain as you (eventually!) get older is something to be proud of. It seems simple as we tend to do it every day, mostly with little thought. But I want you to put some thought into it today – in and out of class. In class, what are your feet doing, what are your hips doing, what is your core and low back doing, what are your shoulders and lats doing? There is a system to picking things up off the ground – heavy and light – so take the time in and out of class to assess how you set up to accomplish that task. Every time you pick something off the ground is a chance to improve your deadlift. Find your system, find your set up. And practice that hinge, that tension in the lats (yes it’s different for something that’s 5# vs something that is 200#), and that bracing of the core.
