**This Firefighter Hero WOD is dedicated to Thomas Butler, FDNY, Squad 1, who was killed on September 11, 2001. He was last seen entering the south tower. Butler loved his country. Not only did he work for the New York City Fire Deartment, he was a part-time Smithtown bay constable and served in the Navy Reserve. “He used to say, ‘I want to serve my country, the city and my town,'” said his father, Bill, a retired city fire captain. “He was a big flag waver.”

Thomas Butler is a firefighter of Squad 1 in Park Slope for 12 years, was killed in Tower Two when it collapsed on Sept. 11. His brother, a Port Authority sergeant and volunteer firefighter in Kings Park, and his father, a retired fire captain, refused to leave Ground Zero until they’d finished working. For months they remained at the site, sifting the wreckage looking for his remains, which they never found.
