For those of you who have been coming to Old City CrossFit for a while, it’s not unusual to be partnered with and Old Cityzen who happens to be deaf.  These situations likely left you wishing you could communicate better.   What’s your name?  What’s your PR for this lift?  How was your weekend?  These are all simple questions that can really facilitate communication.  This is the exact goal for SignWOD.  SignWOD is a series of short, simple videos designed to teach you some basic ASL signs required to effectively and quickly communicate with any deaf athlete who might be in your class.

SignWOD

SignWOD will *NOT* teach you American Sign Language grammar.  It’s important to recognize and understand that ASL is its own language different and independent from English.  Not every sign has a literal English translation, and while learning the letters (A-Z) is important for spelling your name and for some acronyms (PR, Rx, KB, DB, etc…), SignWOD’s goal is to help teach you important signs and phrases that will enable you to start a conversation without having to laboriously (and painfully) spell every word in the sentence.

Without further ado, meet the Old Cityzens who are going to help teach you some words:

Myra – 5 am regular.

Glenn – 5 pm regular.

Erica – Afternoon regular.

Adam – SwimWOD regular.
